The Closing Statement of Let Us Know Each Other Project

Marking International Day for Tolerance on 16 November 2022, Nextep Organization launched the Let Us Know Each Other project to dispel stereotypes and correct the prevailing misconceptions about the communities of northeastern Syria based on religious, ethnic, and other affiliations; Moreover, to enhance the social cohesion and deliver correct concepts to society segments as a step forward towards building sustainable peace in northeastern Syria.

The project activities were as follows:

• 500 surveys were conducted (100 per community) to brief the prevailing perceptions about the targeted communities within the project. These surveys targeted different ages and segments of society in eight cities and towns in the Jazeera region of Northeastern Syria.

• Depending on the results of the surveys, five dialogue workshops were conducted to discuss the prevailing perceptions about the targeted communities. Therefore, correcting those perceptions and rephrasing them into media messages to be shared within the media advocacy campaign at the end of the project. Furthermore, the outcomes and recommendations which resulted from these workshops were shared by Nextep Organization to the public opinion via a press report for each workshop on the organization’s social media accounts.

• A media advocacy campaign was conducted. It included producing media content consisting of fifty infographics and five video materials (ten infographics and one video per community). Those materials have been reviewed and checked by community figures and official institutions representing those communities.

The produced media content was promoted in cooperation with four local media outlets operating in the region: Aso News Network, Vedeng Agency, Suroyo FM, and Welat FM, In addition to three social media influencers: Ageed Choli (activist journalist), Helen Othman (admin of Jamilat Rojava Facebook group), and Aras Hebbo (activist journalist).

• At the final stage phase of the project, 20,000 broachers were distributed (2000 per community). In Derik/Malkiya, Girke lageh/Maabeda, Chel Agha/Jaqdiya, Terbasbiye/Qahtaniya, Qamishli, Amuda, Derbasiye, Hasakah and Shadade.

The reach of the produced media content posted on the social media accounts of the media outlets and the influencers reached (2,856,641) times, and it reached (65,497) times on Nextep Organization’s social media accounts.

As a complementary activity to the Let Us Know Each Other project, an online media advocacy campaign entitled, Our Diversity Is a Wealth was launched, marking World Interfaith Harmony Week. The campaign included messages from well-known and influential religious figures who called for peace and rapprochement between religious followers in order to enhance social coherence in northeastern Syria.

And to discuss the project content and the importance of dispelling stereotypes and correcting some misconceptions about the communities of northeastern Syria. Moreover, six episodes were assigned to be broadcasted following a memorandum of understanding signed between Nextep Organization and Suroyo FM.
